Progress and Passion Since 1955

Al Jamia Al Islamiya

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Al Jamia Al Islamiya set out on a brave new journey on a road less travelled. In 1955, the erstwhile Islamiya College Santhapuram marked a new beginning by fusing together a holistic interdisciplinary Islamic educational paradigm that combined Islamic tenets of knowledge with futuristic modern education. This unique model set the tone and tenor for an Islamic educational renaissance in Kerala. Much has changed since then. In 2003, the institution was upgraded to the status of an Islamic University, officially declared by the world-renowned Islamic scholar late Sheikh Dr. Yusuf Al Qaradawi.

It propelled many other institutions to shed the burdens of the past and enter a new era in Islamic education. The single biggest contribution of Al Jamia was, perhaps, that it was instrumental in changing the prevailing narrative of Islamic education in Kerala. By the grace of Allah, Al Jamia has been successful in producing a new cadre of scholars, thought-leaders, socio-political activists, media persons, writers, and intellectuals capable of leading the community from the front. They are, thank God, rendering exemplary services in a wide spectrum of fields in India and abroad. Al Jamia Al Islamiya embodies an innovative and liberating Islamic educational vision for the creation of an empowered and sensitized generation who could peer into the keyhole of tomorrow to build a brave new world for humanity while abiding by Islamic ethos, justice, and values. Al Jamia has always been unwavering in its commitment to fulfilling its objectives – to mould a new generation of Islamic scholars and thought-leaders who could present and interpret the true spirit of Islamic ideology at its core in the contemporary hyper-connected world, where concepts collide, arguments provoke and ideas flourish. Al Jamia has, invariably, endeavoured to bring the living world into the classroom in order to help the students capture the spirit and tone, and grow out of the tight compass of the textbooks.

Message From
The Rector

Knowledge, in its truest sense, is a divine gift. The first light of knowledge was kindled when Allah imparted it to Adam-marking the foundational moment of human understanding, from which the story of knowledge began. Since then, humanity has continued to develop and refine knowledge through the unique faculty of intellect granted by Allah.

Revealed knowledge (Wahy) stands as the root and fountainhead of all learning-the ultimate source from which all truth flows, and the radiant light that guides human inquiry and discovery.

Al Jamia Al Islamia strives to represent and preserve that light. Its mission is to facilitate the production of knowledge anchored in revelation, ensuring that scholarship remains connected to its divine origins. In doing so, it fulfils a vital responsibility to both faith and society.

Seventy years of Al Jamia bear witness to its remarkable success in pursuing this noble mission. Its graduates, the living legacy of the institution, embody the vision of scholarly leadership-scholars prepared to engage with the complexities of the modern world, and thinkers who keep the torch of wisdom burning for generations.

Yet, the journey is far from complete. Many milestones still remain. With the prayers, generosity, and dedication of all, every aspiration will-by the will of the Almighty-be realised.

Dr. Abdussalam Ahmed

Rector, Al Jamia Al Islamiya
